YPP House of Representatives candidate in Bende Federal constituency and former aide late Sen. Chukwumerije, Dr. Charles Chukwunaru has kicked against the move to site the federal polytechnic for Abia state in Aba.
Dr. Chukwunaru made his made his position known in a press release made available to newsmen following the Senate passage of the bill to establish the polytechnic at Aba.
Below is the full text of a press release from the office of the YPP candidate Dr. Charles Obinna Chukwunaru:
Senator TA Orji spent several millions of naira lobbying to get this bill passed, so he can use it as his only campaign achievement for the 4 years he wasted in the Senate.
Federal educational institutions are established by the federal executive council via the federal ministry of education; and not by Legislative fiat. The Executive thereafter, approaches the National Assembly via an executive bill for legislative backing by way of enactment of an Act of the National Assembly to back it up.
No federal institution in the history of Nigeria has ever been established by a private member bill in the National Assembly, in the history of Nigeria and this case will not be an exception.
What has been passed is just a private member bill sponsored by TA Orji to curry the favour of Ngwa people who constitute about 70% of the voting population in his zone; and on whose rigged votes he purportedly won his Senatorial seat as he was roundly rejected by Umuahia people; even as he was defeated in his own ward and the 3 local councils of Umuahia in the 2015 election. We understand his game plan.
Nonetheless, I am optimistic that the Federal Executive Council will consider Uzuakoli in Bende LGA for the citing of the Abia Federal Poly when the time comes. Aba is already over populated with grossly over stretched public amenities and infrastructure. And there is already an existing state poly in Abia ( Abia State Polytechnic). A simple environmental assessment exercise will clearly reveal that Aba cannot host the proposed Federal Poly. Even the existing state Poly should be relocated to other areas like Isiala Ngwa or Ukwa axis of Abia State.
Recall that during the public hearing in March 2019, Uzuakoli raised an objection to the citing of the Federal Poly in Aba in favour of Uzuakoli in Bende local government Area of Abia North. Citing the proposed Federal Poly at Uzuakoli will among several social, economic and political benefits, ensure equity, natural justice and good conscience in the distribution of amenities among the 17 local government areas and 3 Senatorial zones in Abia State.
