RE: OUTRIGHT DISOBEDIENCE TO THE LOCKDOWN ORDER BY MEMBERS OF TRANSPORT UNIONS IN THE STATE – N.U.R.T.W REACTS:
Recall that the Abia State Chairman Of National Union Of Road Transport Workers, Comr. Eugene Eze Job had on 7th April,2020, through a press release, expressed dissatisfaction and frowned at the rate some transport workers in the State are flouting the lockdown order of the Abia State government.
He admonished all transport workers in the State to desist from such illicit acts, as the government is not in any way mauling the transport workers, but declared total lockdown for the good of her citizens. He urged all transport workers in the State to comply with government and put all hands on deck to ensure the safety of everyone.
The State leadership of N.U.R.T.W also set up a tax force committee that has been working unyieldingly to ensure that all transport workers in the state show total compliance to the lockdown order.
But the leadership of N.U.R.T.W has noticed with dismay the cause of the disobedience to the lockdown order by few members of transport unions in the State.
The NURTW task force committee for Covid-19 chaired by the State chairman had during inspection in Aba today, discovered that security agencies are the ones assisting some of these transporters to flout government directives.
In the cause of our inspection as could be seen in the photographs and video clips, we caught some tricycles and vehicles conveying security agencies (Police) and at the same time carrying passengers too.
These security agencies would assist transporters to load, then join their tricycles or vehicles to pass them in several checkpoints where they could possibly be checkmated, and at the end of the day they would get their entitlements.
It is so disheartening and disappointing that some agents of security agencies instead of complementing our efforts and that of the government, they are busy deliberately subverting our efforts to enrich themselves, even in the face of the dreaded Covid-19 malady.
While the N.U.R.T.W leadership would be working indefatigably to ensure that her members continue to obey government directives and orders, we passionately appeal and call on the State government to call the security agencies they are working with to order, as they are the ones aiding some road transport workers to flout government lockdown order.
This pandemic that is hitherto wreaking global havoc should give all of us concern, and we have to reflect on the numerous havoc this pandemic has caused the world, and then do the right thing for our collective safety.
Long live Okezie Ikpeazu PhD.
Long live Abia State.
Comr. Eugene Eze Job
STATE CHAIRMAN N.U.R.T.W.
