Tricycle Operators Shut Down Umuahia, Lament Incessant Harassment By Police And Touts, Demand A Reversal of Online Tax Payment

Tricycle operators popularly known as keke in Umuahia, the  Abia state capital on Tuesday blocked the popular Isi-Gate, Aba owerri road and its environs protesting and demanding for a total reversal of the newly introduced online mode of tax payment by the state government.

Most of the protesters were seen carrying placards with inscription such as “ NO Online Ticket” also fuming anger and expressing their displeasure on how the state government tax operators has not been fair enough to their plight.

The protesters caused severe standstill of economic activities at the city centre which saw the blockage of major roads and attracted heavy traffic.

A cross section of tricycle operators expressed their anger as one of their spokesmen hinted Abia Pulse News Online about their displeasure on the new mode of collecting tax from tricycle operators in the state.

In his words: “We came out this morning and noticed that government demanded that we should hence forth buy ticket online. We the tricycle operators highly refused it because it is not for our own interest.

“Imagine a situation where the police, the union and “agberos” is always after us. What have we done? This online issue is not for our own interest.

“We have been paying the tricycle tax hand to hand from the vendors located everywhere around and we had no problem with that. Online is inconveniencing us. How can the tricycle riders line up for one person to be booked online?

“And it is not that all of us own a smart phone to book online. Most times when we pay, they say there is no network. It is not good, and we reject it totally.

“We need it as it were before, that is manually, in short hand to hand and that is the reason why we blocked the road to protest” He lamented.

Meanwhile men of the Nigeria Police were on ground to ensure there was no bridge of public peace during the protest.
